The Wasted VigilThe Wasted Vigil by Nadeem Aslam
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If one reads this after reading Kite Runner then one feels that this is too melodramatic. Nevertheless it provides several insights into the happenings in the countryside of Afghanistan. The book is about the life around a Englishman who has settled in rural Afghanistan and has married a local lady. The trials and tribulations that the couple have to go through and how despite that they provide shelter to the needy and try to educate and provide succor to the locals without bothering to check their background.
The story also weaves in the life of a young Russian lady who comes to find out facts about her brother who was in the war with Afghanistan when the Russians had invaded it. She finds some clues about it but the author loses him in the process of narrating details of the other characters. Somewhere in the book the brother is lost and only the sister remains.
A good read for somebody wishing to read only about the good side of the “White men”.
