Seriously Mum, What's an Alpaca?Seriously Mum, What’s an Alpaca? by Alan Parks
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A good book for somebody who needs to prepare themselves for an alternate career. Alan Park and his wife were in Brighton, England. His wife was a dancer, but she is finding it more and more difficult to continue with the profession due to health issues. They decide to quit their current careers and decide to farm Alpacas in Spain.

They make multiple visits to Spain to finalize the location and to establish contacts. After much planning they end up in Spain. Alan’s wife’s daughter moves in with them with her boyfriend.

Even though they had spent three months learning Spanish before moving in they find that it is inadequate. They end up trying to limit their business deals, like buying a vehicle etc., to English speaking people. In the process they get ripped off. Some of the neighbours turn out to be very helpful even though they do not speak the language. Alan specifically becomes the butt of the jokes of the local populace as he does not drink alcohol (not even beer) and does not dance. They have a nice laugh at his expense at every get together they have.

After months of waiting their Alpacas come. They also find themselves adopting cats, dogs, chickens and maintain a pig left behind by the previous owners of the place. The local vet knows very little about Alpacas and has to be picked up from a town, one our away, each time they need him.

Despite all odds they setup their Alpaca farm and are still running it. To have glimpse of their life go to the site They also offer tour of their farm and to experience alpacas.

A good read as an inspiration for people who wish to jump into another career.
